Although Afghanistan’s female literacy rate is among the lowest in the world (24% in 2015), there has been an increase in the number of girls attending school. According to the United Nations’ Girls’ Education Initiative, this has risen from 3% to 36% in recent years. The Norwegian Refugee Council is investing in the futures of Afghan girls by providing tents and shelters, which function as education spaces. Its efforts have helped 80,000 refugee children, who have recently returned from neighbouring Pakistan, to go to class.
