    AfDB - Chad (Koumra Sarh)
For this assignment, we deployed one of our photographers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south of Chad to visually document the ‘gender dividend’ of a newly refurbished highway, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB). These vibrant images depict the life-changing benefits of this repaved and surfaced road, once a dusty track, which connects the small settlement of Koumrah with the larger town of Sarh, over 100 km away.

Our brief was to capture the road’s positive impact on women and girls in images that could be displayed in a photo exhibition at a summit hosted by the AfDB in Johannesburg, South Africa. One important place to visit for this purpose was the COFEMAK Women’s Cooperative in Koumra, the members of which produce shea butter. View the gallery to see how the improved transport route has opened up new markets for the cooperative, amongst other gender-related benefits.
